Spring lawn care

What should you do in spring when the snow starts melting or after it is completely gone?

Take the time to walk around your yard and assess the lawn. Look for dead spots, animal damage, disease, and fungal growth.
Check soil temperature to know when you can expect to see growth and when to apply pre-emergent to the soil.
If you have had problems with crabgrass or other kinds of weed, you need to put down some pre-emergent before soil temperatures get up to 55°F.
Get a soil test before you put fertilizer into the soil. This will give you a snapshot of what is happening inside the soil and what nutrients you need to add.
A soil test also tells you the soil pH, so you can be sure you have the optimal pH for turf grass.
Check those areas with the heaviest snow to see if the grass is matted. Fluff up the grass with a rake or leaf blower.
Only mow or add fertilizer once the forecast shows no risk of hard freezes.
Before adding fertilizer, remember that your grass needs to wake itself up. Adding nitrogen fertilizer to the soil is only sometimes helpful if you want resilient grass.

Summer lawn care

Keeping the lawn green without letting it grow too long; that’s a problem many homeowners struggle with. How do you solve this issue?

Your lawn needs a water source during summer (rain or irrigation). How much watering you do depends on your area’s temperature and humidity levels.
Generally, you want to water the lawn 1-3 times a week with one inch of water each time. To keep the grass healthy, water the lawn only at the first signs of wilting.
If the mower blades are blunt, you will stress the lawn. Keep the mower blade sharp to get an excellent clean cut. Keep the mower blades high enough to avoid scalping.
Proper mowing is essential to the health of your lawn. To keep the lawn height at three inches, you should mow it once a week.
If you prefer to keep the grass very short, you may need to mow it thrice a week.
Some people like to follow a plan of applying less fertilizer on a more frequent schedule (this could mean fertilizing the lawn in summer). When fertilizing the lawn in summer, add iron and other micronutrients.

Fall lawn care

If you have cool-season grass on the lawn, you will need to fertilize the lawn. That is because there is usually aggressive root growth during this season.
Run a de-thatcher over the lawn to remove dead materials and debris on the lawn surface. This step helps to remove dying material from warm-season grass.
Grub prevention should have kicked off earlier in May, June, and July. If you see signs of grub damage or there is a possibility of grub damage in the fall, apply a grub killer.
Keep the grass short at the end of fall if you want to see a better performance during spring. When reducing grass height, stair-step the process over weeks of mowing.
Do not let leaves accumulate on the lawn to the point where they become an issue. If fallen leaves are left on the lawn, you will have more bare spots the following year.
Keep watering the lawn less often or with as much water as during the warmer months. You don’t want the grass to stay moist because of the lower temperatures.
If you need grass fast in bare areas, sod is your solution.

Winter lawn care

Aerate the lawn just before the first frost date; this helps your grass to go dormant.
Fertilize with essential nutrients in preparation for spring.
Do not use de-icing products that contain salt if you want to avoid damage to your lawn.
Get lawn maintenance equipment ready for next year by cleaning and stowing them away.

Stronger Grass

Contrary to what homeowners may think, cutting the lawn does not make the grass weaker. It makes them stronger.

That is because mowing is an indirect process that removes the weakest grasses in the lawn. Cutting grasses stresses them. But the hardest and most resilient shoots heal faster and grow to take up any available spaces in the lawn. The weaker shoots, which recover more slowly, are denied resources and become even weaker. Even Growth

Regular mowing of the lawn creates uniform access to resources for all the grasses in the lawn. When the lawn is cut a few inches above the ground, it allows water, sunlight, and oxygen to penetrate plant roots and the soil at an even rate. The grasses have resources at a consistent rate.

And the chances of areas of patchy or uneven growth occurring in the lawn are much lower. Uniformity in the appearance of the grass across every area of the lawn is essential, and regular mowing facilitates this.

Mulching

Leaving grass cuttings on the lawn after mowing them helps to recycle nutrients back into the soil and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. But the mulching obtained from an irregularly cut lawn has a lower quality than mulching from a regularly cut lawn. That’s because longer blades of grass are weaker and have fewer nutrients than younger growths. Moreover, it is easier to leave grass cuttings on the lawn when they are short.

How Often Should You Cut Your Grass?

Now that you know why you should mow your lawn regularly, how should you define regular?

To determine how often to cut your grass, follow the below rules:

Never remove more than one-third of the grass blades’ height in a single mow
Always cut the grass lower than 3 inches above the ground

Based on these two rules, make seasonal changes on the regularity of the lawn mowing without adversely affecting the health of the lawn.

Winter Season Lawn and Landscape Tasks

This is the easy season for lawn care work, there is not much to do.

You want to continue to water your grass and plants, be sure to bring inside any plants that will not survive the frost and cooler temperatures. Keep an eye on the grass to make sure there is not an insect or disease damage starting to occur and treat if necessary. If you haven’t cleaned up your leaves, then early winter is the perfect time to do so.

Late winter is the time to start planning on trimming most bushes and hedges, although not all will survive being trimmed this time of year so make sure to do research on your particular shrubs before doing so. A pre-emergence herbicide for warm-season weeds should be applied late winter as well as a post-emergence herbicide (2nd application if needed) for cool-season weeds. Begin scheduling mulch and spring colors installation.

Spring Lawn and Landscape Tasks

Weeds are popping up, the grass is turning green, and bushes are growing their leaves back.

Continue watering your grass, about 1” per week. Early spring and late spring are the best time to add fertilizer to warm-season grasses. Before the grass needs to be cut be sure to have your fresh mulch installed and spring flowers because the grass growing season is about to hit and you will not have time to get anything else done except grass cutting.

Remember to mow the lawn at a high setting 3”-4” to help promote good root structure and shade the grassroots. Late spring is a good time for a post-emergence herbicide treatment of warm-season weeds.

Summer Lawn and Landscape Tasks

Luckily, Fort Smith, Arkansas is mostly covered in bermudagrass, and bermudagrass thrives in the heat. The most important task to keep up with during these hot Arkansas summers is to water your lawn.

Give the yard a minimum of 1” of water every week, if we are in a drought up that to 2”. Be sure to spread your watering schedule across 2-3 days for the week, we don’t want the grass drowning. Continue your yard mowing as high as your mower will cut, this will help keep the grass cool and thriving.

Fall Lawn and Landscape Tasks

Continue to water and mow the grass as you normally do. As the leaves start to fall, consider mulching the leaves instead of hauling them away.

Mulched leaves will release nitrogen and other nutrients into the soil and is a natural fertilizer. You’ll want to get some pre-emergent herbicide for cool-season weeds spread across your lawn and do your first application (if needed) for post-emergent herbicide for cool-season weeds late fall. Don’t forget to plant those fall flowers and put out fall lawn decorations to keep your lawn looking great into the winter.

Lawn Fertilization

It is often thought that spreading a little fertilizer every year or two is the bare minimum that is needed to keep a healthy lawn. That is far from correct.

Fertilization is only one part of the equation, and every step listed here is needed to maintain a healthy yard. You should fertilize your lawn twice a year to maintain healthy grass. For the warm season grass types we have in Fort Smith and Van Buren, Arkansas fertilizing is normally done during the middle of spring and early summer.

Fertilizing doesn’t just give your grass a deeper green color, it also promotes growth and more densely growing grass blades. Thicker, more dense grass will help prevent problems such as insects and disease. Fertilizing your lawn in the fall should be on everyone’s bare minimum lawn maintenance tasks list.

Watering Your Lawn

It is basic knowledge that humans need 8 glasses of water each day, likewise, your plants and lawn need water to survive.

The rule of thumb for Arkansas grasses is 1 inch of water each week needs to be soaked up by your lawn. If we are in a heavy rain season, you may not need to water your lawn at all. If we are in a drought, you should give your lawn 2 inches of water each week.

The easiest way to tell if your grass has enough water is to walk across it, if the grass where you stepped is still compressed after you move your foot then you need to water more. You should spread your watering cycle out to 2-3 days a week instead of trying to make your lawn take all of the water at once. Make sure your grass is soaking up the water and not causing run-off. After all, water that is draining down the curb isn’t doing your grass any good.

More is NOT better when watering is concerned.

Be sure to keep your blades sharp. We sharpen our blades every single day, but homeowners can sharpen their blades every 8-10 cuts.
